A racing pigeon from Taiwan , which apparently lost its way during a race, landed in Brunei recently and was caught by residents in the Belait District.
The pigeon, with tag number "KLPR 2009-854888", was captured by Mohd Amin Hj Alias and two of his friends near their working premise at the Marine Department workshop in Kuala Belait.
KLPR is the abbreviation of Kaohsiung District Pigeon Association, and 2009 refers to the year of the competition which the pigeon took part in, with the last six digits the identification number of the pigeon.
Mohd Amin said the pigeon was seen to be resting near the Belait River and they noticed the bird when they were doing inspection on their equipment.
They decided to catch the pigeon after curiosity got the better of them when they noticed a tag on the pigeon's leg.
It did not take the trio much effort as the pigeon seems to be quite tired, probably due to a long flying journey, said Mohd Amin.
Taiwanese are known to be crazy over the sport of pigeon racing.
The most common value of these racing pigeons are a few hundred dollars, with better species going at a few thousand dollars.
The pigeon spent only a short period of time in custody in Kuala Belait, as it flew away while they were trying to feed it.
