Re "Rye man presses pigeon-coop case in Mamaroneck," Saturday article:
A Rye resident is planning on raising, breeding and racing pigeons from his son's backyard in Harbor Heights. If the Village Board gives him a variance for this pigeon coop, by labeling pigeons as "household pets," anyone in Mamaroneck will be able to raise pigeons, without obtaining a variance, even your neighbor.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists, cryptococcus infection, histoplasmosis and psittacosis as diseases that are spread to humans when dust created by pigeon droppings is made airborne. Pigeons have to be trained to fly back to their homes. Many training flights and races will result in pigeon droppings, which are almost impossible to remove on rooftops, barbecues, cars, children's toys, pools and patios. The constant pigeon cooing, day and night, of up to 50 pigeons will also pose a severe hardship on our once lovely serene neighborhood. Home values will assuredly drop — "I love your home, but I really wanted a quiet peaceful neighborhood." Our quality of life will diminish greatly, all so a man living in Rye can go home to his quiet serene condo while he uses Mamaroneck as the dumping ground for his pigeon waste, noise and vermin.
Bad things happen when good people do nothing. Please attend the Village Board meeting at the courthouse at 7 p.m. Thursday to be heard or just show your opposition to Mamaroneck becoming an open haven for pigeon racers.
