NOT many of us could thank our pet bird for an overseas trip and the new car out in the driveway, but for Highfields pigeon racer Patrick Murphy it was a long time coming.
Highfields pigeon racer Patrick Murphy won a car with Unguarded Moment, the sister of Grizzle
Mr Murphy has been racing pigeons for 38 of his 45 years and the sport has taken him all around the world, but it was his racing homer Unguarded Moment that brought home the bacon.
Mr Murphy and Unguarded Moment travelled to South Africa recently for the Sun City Million Dollar pigeon race, taking out the car-winning first place in a preliminary round and finishing up seventh overall.
“She was just best on the day,” a proud Mr Murphy said.
“I’ve been working on selective breeding for about 25 years now and I’ve imported a lot of birds from Belgium and Holland, which are basically a bit of a Mecca for pigeon racing.
“It’s a great hobby and even though it’s not that popular here, it’s pretty big internationally.”
Most pigeons are auctioned at the end of the big race, averaging a price of $20,000 to $30,000.
Unguarded Moment now has a new home, but plenty of her relatives are still in Toowoomba ready to jump into the top spot.
Mr Murphy, who runs Arrden Belle Pigeon Stud, said a racing pigeon could travel up to 12,000km in as little as a day.
