A Brookline man pleaded not guilty this morning to accusations that he is keeping more than 100 pigeons at his home and is creating a public health nuisance.
Edwin Alexanderian, 50, of Hammond Street, appeared in Brookline District Court and pleaded not guilty to criminal charges that he has failed to eliminate a public health nuisance, is maintaining a dwelling that is a nuisance and is keeping pigeons without a permit.
Pat Maloney, Brookline’s chief environmental health inspector, filed the charges against
Alexanderian after Chestnut Hill neighbors complained that the pigeons were flocking to Alexanderian’s home and then defecating all over their homes.
Alexanderian had kept about 100 pigeons in three coops at his home until the town ordered him to dismantle the coops last year because he did not have permits for them and did not have permits to keep the pigeons.
But when Alexanderian dismantled the coops, he said he took the pigeons to New Hampshire and they flew back to his home.
Neighbors have complained to Brookline’s Health Department that Alexanderian is feeding the birds, but he said he is not feeding the birds. He said they are eating fertilizer for his lawn.
Judge Gregory Phillips ordered Alexanderian Wednesday not to feed the birds and continued the case until Oct. 5 for a pretrial hearing.
But Phillips declined Maloney’s request to order Alexanderian to place devices to deter the pigeons from the roof of his home and to hire a specialists to help get rid of the birds.
