Sad news this week for pigeon racers, with the cancellation of the big 'Conquer the Strait' race from Victoria to Tasmania, due to Victoria's continuing pigeon disease epidemic.
The race was deigned to give mainland pigeons the chance to compete in one of the world's great challenges, the flight across Bass Strait.
However, the organisers are going ahead with a great program of racing and fundraising on Saturday and 169 pigeons that were in training for the big race will now fly 220 km from Woolnorth to the northern Tasmanian loft at Perth, as organiser Alex MacDonald and assistant, Peter Wallace explain.Rosemary Grant
